Climb to the Clouds Returns to Mount Washington August 13–15, 2027

Historic hillclimb to run in consecutive years for the first time since 2001, following a record-setting 2026 event

GLEN HOUSE, N.H. — The Mt. Washington Hillclimb, better known as the Climb to the Clouds, will return to the Mt. Washington Auto Road August 13–15, 2027. Following a historic 2026 event that saw Scott Speed set a new course record, the 2027 hillclimb marks the first time the race will take place in consecutive years since 2001.

Sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of New Hampshire (SCCNH), the Climb to the Clouds is the oldest automotive hillclimb in North America. First held in July 1904, the race challenges drivers to navigate the steep grades, tight corners, and unpredictable conditions of the 7.6-mile Mt. Washington Auto Road, climbing from the base of the mountain to its 6,288-foot summit.

The three-day event begins with practice runs on the mountain on Friday, August 13, and Saturday, August 14. On Sunday, August 15, competitors will have two timed runs, one in the morning and another in the afternoon. The field is expected to feature up to 80 cars. The 2026 Climb to the Clouds drew more than 4,500 spectators over the weekend to witness a remarkable performance by Scott Speed, who set a new course record of 5 minutes, 11.89 seconds. 

The Mt. Washington Auto Road first opened to the summit of Mount Washington on August 8, 1861. The historic 7.6-mile road offers visitors the opportunity to drive or take a guided tour to the 6,288-foot summit of the highest peak in the northeastern United States. While a typical drive to the summit takes around 30 minutes, the Climb to the Clouds offers a rare opportunity to watch elite drivers push their cars to the limit on the mountain’s steep, winding pavement.
