2-Hour Guided Tours offer a unique opportunity to learn the true nature and history of Mount Washington.
Every spring, the Mt. Washington Auto Road closes its winter SnowCoach operations and gets to work on clearing the road of snow for summer travel. This is a long process. In the 1800s, it was done by hand with shovels and often wasn’t complete until July 4th weekend. Now, we have the advantage of heavy machinery to complete this project. We use our snowcat and a specialty designed hot-water “drill” to clear culverts of ice.
Join us on our Spring Adventure Tour where we bring you to see this Auto Road during the road clearing process.
Your adventure begins at our main base lodge in one of our tour vans. While on the mountain you will transition to a four-wheeled drive van with the added traction of tire chains. Your tour continues up the mountain, above the tree line to approximately 4800 feet where you’ll have the opportunity to get out and take photos and experience the alpine zone. You get a chance to see Cragway Drift, a section of road where the snowbanks can reach up to 25′ tall depending on the snowpack! This tour does not go to the summit.
Please remember to dress accordingly. Wear rugged shoes or boots. The weather on Mt. Washington is world famous and changes rapidly, particularly this time of year.
