Douglas A. Philbrook
Red Barn Museum
CLOSED due to COVID19

The Douglas A. Philbrook Red Barn Museum is located just outside of our base lodge. Opened in 1861, the Mount Washington Carriage Road was the first man-made tourist attraction in America. Earlier that year Abraham Lincoln had taken office and in spite of his impassioned inaugural address, the Civil War had begun.
Of the many horse and hay barns that served the staging business on the Carriage Road at the turn of the century, this last surviving barn is now where we display our past. In addition to objects and memorabilia from the Auto Road’s history, you can see some of the vehicles that once made the 8-mile journey to the top of New England.
